Trump vs.Berger
If we take a look at Donald Trumps public opinions of the Muslims and the Syrian refugees and see these opinions through the lens of Peter Bergers sacred canopy we get an interesting interpretation. In this case where Trump tweets messages like: “13 Syrian refugees were caught trying to get into the U.S. through the Southern Border. How many made it? WE NEED THE WALL” (Trump, 2015) and “Europe and the U.S. must immediately stop taking in people from Syria. This will be the destruction of civilization as we know it! So sad!“ (Trump, 2016) he appears to become an object for people. An object of admiration for some, and an object of hate and disgust for others. Nevertheless he becomes someone that gains peoples attentions. If we look at the concept of Nomos, this will be most accurate for the followers of Trump, those who agree with him. These people will look at what he is saying, and, together with his authoritative position, believe the things he is saying to be right. Therefore this gives Trump an immense power. He can, in a way, utter his opinions whether it be good or bad, and almost immediately make it the public opinion of thousands, maybe millions of people. This is a scary thought because a lot of the things he has been saying about the Islamic faith and the refugees are hateful and generalized, and it has fueled a hate that is hard to stop.
